On the 24th of April, 2014, Eko-Konnect Research and Education Initiative will host an event  to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day at the Department of Computer Science, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria. The theme for this year's event is 'Computer Education for Girls using Robotics'.

The event will be attended by secondary school girls and their ICT teacher from 10 different schools, students and lecturers of University of Lagos and Yaba College of Technology and representatives from some ICT companies in Lagos.

The event will focus on how girls can learn to program using robots. There will be a presentation by robotics experts from the UK via Skype and demonstrations of programs written for the robots by students of the departments of Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

Eko-Konnect will formally launch its 'Girls in ICT Club' and 'Adopt a Bot programme' for secondary school girls to provide a platform for further grooming for these girls.

The “Adopt a Bot” Programme will be a year long culminating in a Robotics competition among the member schools of the Girls in ICT Club. The program is divided into 4 sessions with each session spanning a period of about 3 months.

  • Session 1: Getting Started with Robotics: Introduces pupils (and teachers) to robotics and the programming fundamentals used by robotics.
  • Session 2: Programming With Robotics: More in depth teaching of the programming languages and platforms used for manipulating robots.
  • Session 3: Using Robotics with Raspberry Pi and untethered: How to use low cost devices like Raspberry Pi to control robots and using robots untethered with arduino usb microcontrollers.
  • Session 4: Preparing for Robotic Competition: The members of the ICT for Girls Club will design a robotic project.
