The Authority of Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) announced the inaugural Girls in ICT Celebration in Brunei Darussalam on the 30th of April 2013 at the Knowledge Hub.

A series of events marked the celebration; where AITI collaborated with iCentre of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), TechOne Global and Google Developers Group (GDG)Women Brunei Darussalam.

The event kicked off with the opening of Clip-IT video competition on 25th April 2013.

The officiating event for Girls in ICT Day was held on 30th April 2013. Parallel workshops were held on the same day, namely Vid-IT and Tech-IT, organized on that day for the female students and entrepreneurs.

The following day saw a Pitch-IT workshop for female students to pitch their ideas onto mobile apps.

Brunei Darussalam has gathered more than 180 girls and young women to participate in various activities held in conjunction with the Girls in ICT Day celebration.

The officiating ceremony for the celebration of Girls in ICT Day was held at the Knowledge Hub on the 30th of April 2013.

The Guest of Honour to officiate the ceremony was Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman, Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports.

Vid-IT

Held on 30th April 2013 @ K-Hub

A workshop on using Adobe Flash to create a simple animation video. It targeted 40 Year 10 female students and was facilitated by TechOne Global.

11 schools participated in the Vid-IT competition.

Tech-IT

Held on 30th April 2013 @ K-Hub.

A workshop gathering matured audience from the higher learning institutions and the public to discuss various ICT-related topics presented by aspiring women and entrepreneurs in the field.

Led by iCentre and supported by Google Developers Group (GDG) Women Brunei.

No. of participants:  about 50 individuals and also students from higher learning institutions.

Pitch - IT

Held on 1st May 2013 at Seri Kerna Hall, AITI.

Focuses on lower six students.

A workshop to encourage participants to generate innovative ideas on mobile apps and then pitching their ideas towards commercially potential products.

5 schools, 10 students from each school participated in the Pitch – IT competition.

Clip - IT

A one minute video-making challenge organised by AITI.

Open to girls of age 13 – 19 years old.

Open to Bruneian citizens and permanent residents.

Participants must be studying in a local education institution.

The theme is “IT’s a girl’s world”.

The prize presentation on the award of the winning video was held on 26th of May 2013.

Conclusion

It is hoped that the participants, especially girls and young women, would be more attracted to the fields of ICT and aspired towards a career path in ICT-related professions

This event is not intended to discriminate the males; rather it is to celebrate and increase the involvement and interest of the females in ICT with the support of its male counterparts
