The Girls in ICT initiative at ITU is a global effort to raise awareness on empowering and encouraging girls and young women to consider studies and careers in ICTs. The International Girls in ICT Day, celebrated on the 4th Thursday of April each year, is an initiative backed by ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014). ITU acknowledges the efforts of the Member States to actively celebrate the International Girls in ICT Day. Please see the Girls in ICT Day Events to know more about the celebrations organized by Ministries of Member States.
Up to now, over 5,200 events in over 150 countries have taken place empowering more than 168,000 girls and young women globally.
This incredible success of the Girls in ICT Day celebrations around the world is dependent on the continuous commitment of our partners, sponsors, and stakeholders.
Why be a part of the Girls in ICT initiative?
Corporate partners in the ICT or ICT-related sectors are highly valuable to this initiative as they have the best position to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider ICT studies and careers. Girls and young women will have the opportunity to get a first-hand insight into the ICT sector through industry leaders like you and understand the range of career possibilities in the ICT field.
You will be contributing to the expansion of the female labour market in the ICT sector and will be able to derive long-term benefits. Supporting the growth of new female talent for the ICT sector will be a measure to avoid future challenges in employing women for ICT-related positions. Being part of this initiative will give you the chance to play an active role in enabling future workforce diversity.
Encouraging girls and young women to consider ICT studies and careers will also help to fulfill an important dimension of your corporate social responsibility as well as be in line with the United Nations Millennium Development Goal 3 to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The International Telecommunication Union, the UN specialized agency for Information and Communication Technology, is committed to celebrating the International Girls in ICT Day and is highly appreciative of the efforts undertaken by the corporate partners.
