e-Mentoring for diversity in sciences and engineering

Microsoft YouthSpark is a companywide initiative designed to create opportunities for hundreds of millions of youth around the world. Through partnerships with governments, nonprofits and businesses, we aim to empower youth to imagine and realize their full potential by connecting them with greater education, employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities. We want to empower youth to change their world.

The MAGiC Mid-Atlantic Girls Collaborative brings together organizations and individuals that are committed to informing and motivating girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to encourage collaboration and improve inter-program communication. Our goal is to strengthen capacity, increase continuation of girl-serving STEM programs and create a wider audience for gender-related STEM issues. MAGiC serves Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

This is an EU-funded project that to encourage more girls to study in STEM fields through gender training for STEM teachers, online resources for girls, and awareness raising initiatives.

MobileMonday has 80+ chapters worldwide and is supported by the world's largest volunteer network of passionate mobile professionals committed to growth of the industry. Weekly networking events, often featuring high-profile speakers sharing timely and trendy tech developments, is a standard feature.

Women make up 56% of college graduates, but represent only 35% of the tech workforce.  Meanwhile there’s an 80% attrition rate for Women involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related jobs. This has to change. So we’re building an online community that leverages the power of pipeline programs to advise, advocate, and accelerate women in STEM related jobs around the world.

"The ‘Advise Her’ initiative is something I think ITU can certainly support and help take forward through our Girls and ICT initiatives, and our Tech Needs Girls campaign.

We can help to connect with women leaders to ‘advise, advocate, and accelerate’, and we can contribute to the development of the proposed online community. This community will aim to leverage the power of pipeline programmes for retaining women in employment and reducing the attrition rates in STEM university programs, as well as increasing the funding of women-run start-ups and increasing the numbers of STEM-related companies and venture capitalists.

I would like us to seek ways to support and grow this initiative through the ITU's existing programmes and communities."

La Red de Mujeres en Informática tiene como objetivo incrementar la presencia de mujeres en los estudios de Ciencias y Computación. The vision of the NGCP is to bring together organizations throughout the United States that are committed to informing and encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEM.

Nerd Girls is a growing movement by young women in the sci-tech fields to create a worldwide network and to offer support and encouragement, so that, more girls will study these subjects in school and enter into what have historically been male-dominated professions. An equally important part of the Nerd Girl mission is to dispel the myths and stereotypes about these fields and the women who choose to enter them. They celebrate the Beauty of Brains!

OWSD, formerly TWOWS, is the first international forum uniting women scientists from the South with the objective of strengthening their role in the development process and promoting their representation in scientific and technological leadership.

2012 Call for Applications of OWSD Postgraduate Fellowships: Deadline 31 July

Applications are being accepted for the OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) at Centres of Excellence in the South. Deadline for submission is 31 July 2012.

PHP Women Our aim is to provide a network of support and mentorship to women, help women become more involved with PHP, increase our numbers at conferences as speakers and attendees, and provide a “female friendly” work atmosphere.

Founded by former astronaut Sally Ride, Sally Ride Science is an organization whose mission is "to increase the number of girls who are technically literate and who have the foundation they need to go on in science, math, or engineering." The web site, intended for parents, teachers, and girls, provides information about why such efforts are needed and activities and resources designed to achieve this mission.

Welcome to the Journey of She’s the Geek. Some might say it is a blog but we see it as a community of women who share love, passion and inspiration for all that is good. Monique Ross and René Parker are the co-founders of She’s the Geek but everyone can be a contributor.
