For Women and Girls:  Explore ICT Opportunities

This part of the Girls in ICT Portal contains links to scholarships, contests and awards, training and internships, online networks, tech camps, information about national Girls in ICT Day events and other initiatives to encourage and support women and girls to enter the ICT sector.  Please note that any questions you may have about any of the listed programs should be directed to the program provider.

For Academia, Companies, Governments and Organizations: Help Keep the Portal Current

ITU encourages academic institutions, companies, government and aid agencies, NGOs, and others that offer scholarships, contests and awards, training and internships, online networks, tech camps, and Girls in ICT Day events to add new programs and update the information posted here to keep it current.  All you need to do is register and add or edit information about your program.  The Girls in ICT Portal administrator will review your content before posting it to the public.

How to search?

Users can filter the resources in line with their own needs.  You can filter by type of program and the region and country in which the program is offered. You will find countries listed under the relevant region. Programs offered globally or which are not specific to one region can be found by using the global program filter.  You may refine the search to best meet your needs.

The Association of South African Women in Science and Engineering (SA WISE) is a dynamic association for all those who support the idea of strengthening the role of women in science and engineering in South Africa.

SA WISE aims to strengthen this role by inter alia:

  • raising the profile of women scientists and engineers
  • highlighting and addressing problems faced specifically by women in these fields
  • lobbying for the advancement of women in science and engineering
  • providing leadership and role models for young people wishing to enter the fields of science and engineering

An important function of SA WISE is to improve communication among women scientists and engineers, with e-mail being the preferred medium of communication. Members are encouraged to send ideas and information to SA WISE. SA WISE also maintains contact with other assocations of women in science and engineering world-wide

Telecentre Women Digital Literacy Campaign Contest: Help us achieve the goal of training 1 million women by the year-end 2012.

Calling all partners! Telecentre.org Foundation (TCF) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) are hosting a contest (“Contest”) to award ICT equipment to the telecentre that trains the most  number of women to become digitally literate.

This Contest is in support of the Telecentre Women: Digital Literacy Campaign (the “Campaign”) (http://women.telecentre.org) under the Cooperation Agreement signed by TCF and ITU.

Since the Campaign was launched, you have already succeeded in training nearly one quarter of a million women to become digitally literate.  This Contest is designed to achieve our goal of training 1 million women by year end—both  ensuring that all women who were trained have been fully reported and to encourage telecentres to continue their training efforts.

All partners of the TCW Campaign are invited to submit to TCF verifiable reports of the digital literacy trainings they’ve conducted for women up through 1 September 2012. TCF will be responsible for tallying and verifying the reports and submit the final results to ITU for purposes of awarding the ICT equipment.  ITU will award the telecentre that succeeds in training the most number of women under the Campaign ICT equipment for their telecentre worth 15,000 Swiss Francs.

Mechanics of the Contest:
• The Contest is open to telecentres in the Campaign. Telecentre networks are excluded from this contest.
• Only Campaign partners who are also members of the telecentre.org community can participate in the Contest.  To become an official Campaign partner, a telecentre must complete the Campaign Reply Form available for download at the Campaign website. To become a member of the telecentre.org community, the partner must sign up for membership in any of TCF’s community sites no later than September 1  (Note: Membership is free but subject to approval by TCF management).

Computer science is the study of the theoretical and practical aspects of computer technology and computer usage. The department offers courses on a wide range of topics, many of which include a mathematical component. UC Santa Cruz offers both the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, as well as the master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees, in computer science. Besides offering instructional courses, the Computer Science Department engages in a substantial research program in which both advanced undergraduates and graduate students participate.

University of Colombo created an “External Degree Program” resulting in a Bachelor of Information Technology.  While university staff members conduct the examinations, the program is linked with research facilities and private sector training institutions, who together, design the curriculum and provide the actual instruction.  The program aims to produce 3,000 graduates in the next three years, 100 times the capacity that the university alone could have produced.

The BS degree program in Computer Science is designed to prepare students for careers as computer specialists and for graduate study in computer science. It culminates in a course in which students carry out year-long software engineering projects for industry. This degree emphasizes knowledge and awareness of computing at all levels, from circuits and computer architecture through operating systems and programming languages to large application systems; the theoretical and mathematical aspects of computing; the interdependence of hardware and software; and the challenge of large-scale software production and the engineering principles used to meet that challenge.
